My kid is only 17. Why didn’t I get the Child Credit.


The Child Tax Credit is a misnomer.  You would think that it is given when you have a child. 

Actually the credit of $1000 per child only applies to a child who did not turn 17 during the year.  Which means, you only get the credit as long as your child is 16 our under.

Sniff.  They grow up so fast.  This just adds to the bittersweet sentiment.

The beauty of the disabled dependant loop.

One of my customers is the caregiver for a disabled relative.  The relative receives money from the state.  The caregiver is hired by the state to work for the disabled relative. 

Although the disabled relative receives money from the state.  The caregiver provides more than half of the funancial support for the disabled relative.  And  yet, the caregiver receives a W-2 with the name of the disabled relative as the payer.

In this case, the caregiver is allowed to claim the disabled relative as a dependant and take an exemption credit on the tax return of the caregiver.

Pretty interesting loop that helps all parties.
